Learning a new skill used to mean finding a course, booking a teacher, and hoping their pace matched yours. Now you have an infinitely patient tutor that can decompose any skill, watch you practice, and give feedback in seconds — if you use it as a coach, not an answer machine.
This guide is a system for learning any skill with AI — coding, writing, a language, an instrument, negotiation, public speaking. It works because it borrows from what actually makes people improve (deliberate practice, tight feedback loops, spaced retrieval) and uses AI where it accelerates those, not where it replaces them.

Step 1: Choose a skill you can define as performance
"Learn Spanish" is not a skill. "Hold a 5-minute conversation about my weekend" is. "Get better at writing" is not a skill. "Write a 600-word essay with a clear thesis and one counterargument paragraph" is.
AI can help you make the shift. Run this first:
I want to learn [vague skill]. Help me define it as 3 observable performances I could do in 30 days that would prove I've improved. Each performance must be something you could watch me do and grade pass/fail. Rank them easy → hard.
You need performances because practice without a target is rehearsal without a stage. Pick the middle one — hard enough to require growth, easy enough to be reachable in a month.
Examples:
- Photography: "Take 10 portraits where the subject's eyes are sharp, background is separated, and the mood matches the brief."
- Python: "Build a CLI tool that reads a CSV, filters by date, and outputs a summary — with tests."
- Presentation: "Deliver a 7-minute talk without reading slides, handling 2 audience questions."
If you can't describe the performance, you can't design practice for it.
Step 2: Decompose the skill before you practice it
Every skill looks monolithic from the outside. From the inside, it's 4 to 6 sub-skills combined. Ask AI to decompose:
Decompose [performance] into 4–6 sub-skills. For each, tell me: what "good" looks like at beginner level, what drill isolates it, and how I'll know I've improved. Order them by which to train first — foundations before integration.
Then, for each sub-skill, ask the bottleneck question:
For [sub-skill], what is the single most common bottleneck for beginners, and what is the smallest drill that directly attacks it? I have [time per day] and [tools available].
This prevents the default failure: practicing the whole skill badly instead of the weakest part precisely.
Concrete decomposition for "hold a 5-minute conversation":
- Vocabulary retrieval under pressure → drill: timed translation, 30 seconds per prompt
- Sentence scaffolding → drill: extend a 3-word seed into a full sentence 5 ways
- Listening and repair → drill: AI speaks with background noise parameter, you paraphrase back
You don't need to be good at all of them. You need to know which one is currently limiting you.
Step 3: Build a 30-day plan with the right shape
A good plan is not "study every day." It has shape: simple → complex, isolated → integrated, frequent feedback → delayed feedback.

Build a 30-day plan for [performance]. Constraints: [hours per day], [days per week]. Shape: Week 1 — sub-skill isolation (one sub-skill per session), Week 2 — paired sub-skills, Week 3 — full performance at reduced difficulty, Week 4 — full performance under realistic constraints with self-evaluation. Include one rest day per week and a 10-minute review ritual per session.
The 10-minute review ritual matters more than the hour of practice. Without it, you forget 70% by the next session. Make it retrieval:
For the review ritual, quiz me on yesterday's material before showing today's. One question at a time, no hints, tell me what's missing after I answer.
That is spaced retrieval — the highest-yield learning technique, and the one AI does best when prompted correctly.
Step 4: Practice deliberately, not just repeatedly
Repetition without feedback is entertainment. Deliberate practice is repetition with a target just beyond your current ability and feedback within minutes. AI gives you that loop.
The tight loop (per session, 30–45 minutes):
- Attempt — Perform one sub-skill or full task without help. Record it (write, code, audio).
- Feedback — Paste the attempt and run a specific diagnostic:
Here's my attempt: [attempt]. Diagnose it against [sub-skill criteria]. Give me: one thing to keep, one thing to change, and a 5-minute drill that isolates the change. Be specific — no generic praise.
Generic praise ("Great job, try to be more consistent!") is useless. The diagnostic must name the change and give you a way to practice just that.

The Feynman check (twice a week):
Have me explain [what I did and why] as if to a beginner. Interrupt me if I use jargon, skip a step, or say something inaccurate. At the end, tell me if my explanation shows real understanding or pattern-matching.
If you can't explain your choices, you can't adapt them when the situation changes. That is the difference between performing and learning.
The level ladder:
Explain [technique / concept behind the skill] at three levels: one sentence for a 10-year-old, one paragraph for a peer, one paragraph for an expert with the nuance the simpler versions omit. Then quiz me at the peer level.

Step 5: Get feedback you'd otherwise wait weeks for
In normal learning, feedback is scarce — a teacher's weekly note, a code review, a rare performance. AI gives you daily feedback if you prompt for critique, not comfort:
Review this as a strict expert: [attempt]. Score it 1–10 on [criteria]. List every issue that keeps it below 8, ordered by impact. For the top issue, show me before/after on the same material. Don't soften the feedback.
Ask for strict. Models default to encouraging, which feels nice and teaches nothing. You can handle blunt — you need it.
Then, crucially, re-attempt immediately. Feedback without immediate re-attempt decays. The loop is attempt → feedback → re-attempt the same task better, not attempt → feedback → move on.
When the re-attempt is good enough, ask AI to raise difficulty:
That was good at this level. Make the next drill 20% harder by [adding constraint / time pressure / less scaffolding]. Don't change the performance — just the constraints.
Progress is constraints tightening, not tasks changing.
Common traps and fixes
Trap 1: Letting AI do the skill for you. You ask "write my essay" and read the result. Fix: never let AI produce the performance. Let it produce the drill and feedback — you produce the attempt.
Trap 2: Practicing what you're already good at. It feels productive because you're fluent. Fix: after each session, ask "What was hardest?" and make the next session attack that.
Trap 3: No rest, no retrieval. You study 7 days straight and never quiz yourself. Fix: one rest day per week (consolidation) and start every session with a 5-question recall quiz from prior sessions.
Trap 4: Generic goals. "Get better at guitar" has no finish line, so motivation dies. Fix: define the 30-day performance and put a date on it. Share it with someone.
A one-week starter you can copy today
If 30 days feels abstract, do one week:
- Day 1: Define the performance and decompose (Steps 1–2). Build the 30-day plan.
- Day 2–3: Sub-skill isolation with tight loop (attempt → specific feedback → re-attempt).
- Day 4: Feynman check — teach what you've learned to the AI, let it find gaps.
- Day 5–6: Paired sub-skills + level ladder.
- Day 7: Full performance at reduced difficulty, strict feedback, plan Week 2.
That week teaches you how to learn the skill. Weeks 2–4 just scale it.
