There are two ways students use AI. The first is asking it to do the assignment — which teaches nothing and increasingly gets caught. The second is using it as the best study tool ever built: a tutor that's available at 2 a.m., never gets impatient, and can explain the same concept five different ways until one lands.

These 25 prompts are all version two. Copy them into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and adapt the bracketed parts.

Understanding difficult concepts

1. The plain-language explainer. Our Explain a Hard Topic prompt does this in one shot. Manual version:

Explain [concept] to me as if I'm smart but know nothing about this field. Use one everyday analogy, then explain why the analogy breaks down. No jargon without defining it.

The "why the analogy breaks down" part matters — analogies that go unchallenged become misconceptions.

2. Three depths, one concept.

Explain [concept] three times: once to a 10-year-old, once to a high school student, once to a university professor. I'll tell you which version finally made it click.

3. The prerequisite check.

I'm struggling with [topic]. What are the 2–3 underlying concepts I probably never fully understood? Explain each in two sentences so I can tell which one is my actual gap.

This prompt is diagnostic gold. Most "I'm bad at math" moments are one shaky foundation from three chapters ago.

4. Connect it to what I know.

I understand [thing you already know] well. Explain [new concept] by building directly on that — show me what's the same, what's different, and why the difference matters.

5. The question machine.

I'm learning [topic]. Ask me one question at a time to test my understanding. After each answer, tell me if I'm right, and go deeper or move on accordingly.

Study plans and exam prep

6. The personalized study plan. Our Personalized Study Plan prompt builds one around your deadline and available hours. The core ask:

Build me a study plan for [subject/exam]. My exam is [date], I can study [hours] per day, and I'm currently weak at [topics]. Break it into daily sessions with specific goals — not "review chapter 3" but "be able to solve X type of problem."

7. The study guide generator. Paste your notes or textbook section into the Study Guide Generator prompt, or ask:

Turn these notes into a study guide: key terms with definitions, the 5 most likely exam questions, and one mnemonic for the hardest thing to remember. Notes: [notes]

8. Active recall instead of rereading.

Quiz me on [topic] with 10 questions of increasing difficulty. Don't show me the answers until I've attempted all 10. Then grade me and explain what I got wrong.

Rereading feels productive and isn't. Retrieval practice — being made to recall — is what actually sticks.

9. The past-paper drill.

Here's an exam question I got wrong: [question + your answer]. Explain what the question was really testing, where my reasoning went wrong, and give me 2 similar questions to try.

10. Spaced repetition schedule.

I need to memorize [list of items/concepts]. Create a spaced repetition schedule for the next 14 days, and generate flashcard-style prompts I can self-test with.

Writing and assignments

11. The essay structure check.

Here's my essay thesis and outline: [outline]. Argue against my thesis as strongly as you can. I need to know the best counterargument so I can address it.

12. Feedback before submission.

Act as a strict teaching assistant grading this essay against [rubric or assignment brief]. Grade it, list every place I'd lose marks, and show what a top-band version of my weakest paragraph looks like.

13. The clarity pass.

Here's a paragraph from my assignment: [paragraph]. Rewrite it more clearly without changing the meaning or adding content. Then tell me what made the original unclear so I stop doing it.

14. Citation sanity check.

Here are claims I'm making: [claims]. For each, tell me what kind of evidence would be needed and what a skeptical professor would ask. (Then go find real sources yourself — never cite AI-suggested sources without reading them.)

Learning skills, not just subjects

15. The Feynman test. The Feynman Technique Tutor prompt runs the classic technique: explain it simply, find where you stumble, fill the gap. Manual version:

I'm going to explain [concept] in my own words. Interrupt me wherever my explanation is vague, circular, or wrong. Then make me try again. My explanation: [explanation]

16. The Socratic tutor. The single best learning prompt in our library: the Socratic Tutor doesn't give answers — it asks the questions that lead you to them, which is exactly how learning works.

17. Learn anything in 30 days. The Learn Any Skill in 30 Days prompt turns "I want to learn X" into a day-by-day plan with milestones and checkpoints.

18. The mistake log.

I keep making this type of mistake in [subject]: [description of mistake]. What's the underlying misconception? Give me a 3-question drill that would catch it next time.

Productivity and organization

19. Reading triage.

Here's my reading list: [list]. Which 2 items give me 80% of the understanding, which can I skim, and which can I skip? Justify each call.

20. Lecture notes cleanup.

Here are my messy lecture notes: [notes]. Reorganize them into: main ideas, supporting details, questions I should follow up on, and connections to [other topic we covered].

21. The deadline triage.

I have these assignments: [list with deadlines and weights]. Help me plan the week — what order maximizes my grade, and what's realistic to do well given [hours available]?

Use AI to learn, not to cheat

One rule keeps you safe and actually smarter: AI explains, you produce. Use it to understand, quiz yourself, plan, and get feedback on your own work. Don't use it to generate the thing that gets graded. That's the line — both ethically and practically, because the skills you skip are the ones the exam tests.
